How do I know if my system requires an air gap faucet?

A standard faucet will have a single tube attaching to the underside of the faucet, where as an air-gap faucet have three tubes attached to its underside.

What does “air-gap” mean?

The term air-gap refers to the "gap" in the drain line of an RO system to prevent back-flow from your household sewage line into your RO system. The drain water flows out of your reverse osmosis system into one tube of the air-gap, passes over the gap, and then down the other tube into the sink drain piping. Some dishwashers also use an air-gap, but they use a much larger line than a RO system.

Air gap faucets can be used with both airgap and non-airgap RO systems. Non-airgap faucets can only be used with non-airgap systems. If your building code calls for an airgap, but you prefer one of the non-air-gap faucets, then you may use an external air-gap that fits around the RO faucet, or a combination dishwasher and RO system air-gap.

Advantages:

Air-gap faucets reduce the amount of sewage backflow that can back up into your RO system.

Disadvantages:

They can be noisy and gurgle. They sometimes back up all over your counter top. The Home Master advanced reverse osmosis system uses a one-way valve on the drain line which prevents sewage backup into the system. It also allows you to choose from a wider variety of RO faucets.
